Did you know that the foundation of a healthy smile is healthy gums? Without the support that your gums provide, your teeth would not stay in place or be capable of chewing and grinding your food. As a result, caring for your gums is just as important as maintaining your teeth. If your gums bleed easily when you brush or are swollen and tender, you may have the first signs of gum disease. Although this is a common condition, it can wreak havoc on your oral and overall health if it’s left untreated. Dr. Lee and our team can provide the necessary periodontal therapy in North Dallas, TX to eradicate gum disease. Do you think you could have gum disease? Early on, gum disease can be treated with a routine dental cleaning. However, if it is more advanced, we may need to use more invasive treatments like scaling and root planing. Basically, in scaling, we go beneath the gum line to clear out pockets of trapped plaque and bacteria. Then, in root planing, we make the root surfaces smooth to help in the healing process and prevent reinfection in the future.
Although we do our best to be as thorough as possible, there may be spots of bacteria that we can’t see in treatment. That’s exactly why we often supplement scaling and root planing with antibiotic therapy. This strong topical solution is applied to the gum line and quickly dries. Then over the course of a few days, it dissolves and enters the small spaces that may have been missed. Keep in mind that we may need to repeat these therapies again in three to four months to make sure that the infection is completely gone.
