During October, most people think about things like pumpkin spice treats and scary costumes. But did you know that October is also Dental Hygiene Awareness Month? It is the perfect time to think about whether your habits are supporting your oral health. What habits can help you to maintain a clean and healthy smile? Here are some suggestions:

Brush Your Teeth At least Twice a Day

You should try to brush your teeth every morning and every evening. To make your routine as effective as possible, you should:

  • Be gentle. Do not press too hard, and be sure to use a soft-bristled brush.
  • Choose the right time. You should wait 30 – 60 minutes after consuming acidic foods before you brush your teeth.
  • Be thorough. Do not forget to clean the backs of your teeth and the area along the gumline.
  • Spend enough time. It should take you about two minutes to brush your teeth. Spend about 30 seconds cleaning each quadrant of your mouth.

Do Not Forget to Floss

You should make it a habit to floss your teeth at least once a day, preferably right before you brush in the evening. Start with about 18 inches of floss, and wrap it around your middle fingers. Roll the floss so you are always cleaning your teeth with a clean section. Also, remember to be careful not to “snap” the floss between your teeth. Instead, insert it gently and move it along the sides of both teeth that surround a space.

Consider Using a Mouth Rinse

Mouth rinses and mouthwashes can enhance your oral hygiene routine if you use the right product. For example, if you are concerned about cavities, a fluoride-containing mouth rinse might be just what you need. If you are prone to gum disease, you might need a product that is formulated specifically for periodontal health. Ask your dental team for suggestions on which mouthwash they recommend.

Drink Lots of Water

You might be indulging in a lot of sugary treats this time of year. To protect your teeth, be sure to sip on plenty of water. It can rinse away food particles and bacteria that might otherwise stick to your teeth and lead to decay.

Visit Your Dentist

If it has been more than six months since your last dental cleaning, now is the time to book an appointment. Your hygienist can clean plaque and tartar off of your teeth and give you personalized tips on how to care for your mouth. Your dentist will examine your teeth and let you know if there are any developing issues that require attention.

A clean mouth is a healthier mouth! If you see room for improvement in your oral hygiene routine, now is the time to make needed adjustments.
